In short

Load security is part of the daily check whenever the vehicle is loaded. It confirms the load is restrained appropriately for its weight and type, evenly distributed, and can't move, shift or fall during the journey.

What to check

Checking load security, step by step

  • Load restrained by adequate straps, chains or a rated system
  • Restraints in good condition, not frayed or damaged
  • Load evenly distributed and within axle limits
  • Curtains, tailboards and doors closed and secure
  • Nothing overhanging or able to fall
  • Sheeting secure on tippers and open loads

Common defects

Too few or worn straps
Unevenly distributed or overloaded axles
Damaged curtains or catches
Loose material on tippers

When to fail it

Fail the item if the load isn't adequately secured for its weight and type, restraints are damaged, or the vehicle is overloaded on any axle. Don't move until it's corrected.

Why it matters

Shifting or falling loads cause serious collisions and are a top enforcement priority. Load-security offences carry heavy penalties and O-licence consequences.
